Who we are

Muslim Sources (https://muslimsources.org) is an online database that makes it easier for journalists to find credible Muslim experts. By including diverse voices in their coverage, journalists are better able to reflect Canada’s increasing diversity in their content.

Muslim Sources started off as an independent project with support from some community members and organizations as supporters and sponsors.

Our goal is to help the Muslim community reclaim its narrative by amplifying Muslim voices. One way we are doing this is by building a database of Muslim experts in various subject areas to help journalists in their quest for inclusion and diversity. We also hope to work with the Muslim community to encourage them and equip them with the tools and skills necessary to tell their own stories and to communicate their knowledge and opinions in an effective way.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Users who make a submission through our Join our database form agree to have their profiles and photos published in our expert database and to be contacted by journalists and the media through the contact form. The email address is not visible publicly but contact requests are sent to the provided email address from “Muslim Sources” with details of the person contacting included in the message.

Profile images and information may be used by Muslim Sources in social media posts or emails to promote the database and encourage others to join.

Cookies

To ensure our website works correctly, the system may at times place a small piece of data known as a cookie on your computer or mobile device. A cookie is a text file stored by a web server on a computer or mobile device. The content of a cookie can be retrieved or read only by the server that creates the cookie. The text in a cookie often consists of identifiers, site names, and some numbers and characters. Cookies are unique to the browsers or mobile applications you use, and enable websites to store data such as your preferences or items in your shopping cart. Cookies allow the website to work properly and to analyze traffic, offer enhanced functionality, social media features, and personalize content and ads.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who we share your data with

We do not share your personal data with anyone unless indicated. The email address of experts in the database is accessible by contact form requests sent to them. Any information you enter in the contact form is shared with the expert you are contacting and a copy is sent to Muslim Sources. Any other data will only shared with third parties if required to process our services to you such as shipping or delivery of products or services, payment processes, or if required by law.

Payment and third-party services

In the case you make a payment via the Shop for supporters for a product or service, your information is processed through a secure payment gateway which allows for your information to be encrypted through the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. We do not receive your payment information, only your delivery address and name which is used to process your order through other third-party providers.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that join our database, we store the personal information they provide in their user profile and a backup copy.

Ads

Ads appearing on any of our websites may be delivered to users by advertising partners, who may set cookies. These cookies allow the ad server to recognize your computer each time they send you an online advertisement to compile information about you or others who use your computer. This information allows ad networks to, among other things, deliver targeted advertisements that they believe will be of most interest to you.

Muslim Sources may change this privacy policy from time to time at our discretion. We encourage visitors to frequently check this page for any changes to its Privacy Policy. Your continued use of this site after any change in this Privacy Policy will constitute your acceptance of such change.
